Prenatal Blood Test
ViaMedica offers a wide array of prenatal screening services such as:
Harmony Prenatal Test
The Harmony test is procured through a venous blood sample (drawn in the arm) and is performed after 10 weeks gestation. The Harmony tests for Trisomy 21, 18, and 13 (the Prenatest only detects Trisomy 21 and 18) but does not rule out all fetal abnormalities. The Harmony test is 99% accurate with a false-positive rate of less than 0.1%. With the Harmony test, patients also have the option to test for conditions caused by having an extra or missing copy of the X or Y chromosomes, including Turner and Klinefelter syndromes. The results will be sent directly to your physician (not ViaMedica) in 1-2 wks. An ultrasound is not performed with the Harmony test.
The Prenatest and Harmony blood samples are processed by Dynacare Next.
Prenatal Blood Test Panels:
Prenatal Panels provide a thorough screening for many general health tests, infectious diseases, immunity and STI's (sexually transmitted infections). Prenatal panels are commonly ordered by your physician during the first trimester of pregnancy.
These prenatal testing panels include but are not limited to: Blood Typing, CBC (complete blood count), Glucose, Urinalysis, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) Immunity, Varicella Zoster Virus Antibody, HIV, Syphilis, Parvovirus (fifth’s disease), and Toxoplasmosis. The tests performed will depend on what your physician has ordered. Turnaround time is generally 1-3 business days.
Gestational Diabetes Glucose Tolerance Testing (GTT):
1 Hour Glucose Test:
When you arrive for the test, a fasting blood sample will be taken (fasting 12 hours from food and alcohol, water is permitted) and a urine sample will be tested for glucose. You will then be given a sugar solution that contains 50 grams of glucose. It tastes like a very sweet soda (orange flavor), and you must drink it within 10 minutes.
An hour later a blood sample is taken from your arm to check your blood sugar level. The idea is to see how efficiently your body processes sugar. The results should be available in 1-3 days.
2 Hour Glucose Test:
When you arrive for the test, a fasting blood sample will be taken (fasting 12 hours from food and alcohol, water permitted) and a urine sample will be tested for glucose. You will then be given a sugar solution that contains 75 grams of glucose. It tastes like a very sweet soda (orange flavor), and you must drink it within in 10 minutes.
2 hours later a blood sample is taken from your arm to check your blood sugar level. The results should be available in 1-3 days.
Please Note: You must remain in the clinic during the full testing and waiting period.
